LOCOG has chosen Salisbury Cathedral as the iconic location for the official start of Day 55 of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay, Thursday 12 July.
David Coulthard, Director of Marketing and Communications, said “We hope to welcome many hundreds of people here in the Cathedral Close between 7.00am – 8.00am to see the Olympic Torch as it begins its day travelling through South Wiltshire and Dorset en route to Weymouth. Having being kept in a safe location overnight the torch arrives in the Close shortly before it leaves at 7.54am.
“Rousing entertainment will be provided from 7.00am by the Cathedral School jazz band Jazbytes and children’s choirs from schools in the Close, and the Cathedral Choir. Light refreshments will also be available. And rumour has it that we have a significant VIP to run the torch from the Cathedral…… so why not get up early and come to the Close for what will be an energising start to your day!”
Continuing the Olympic theme, the Cathedral and its west cloister will be opened to the public once the torch has left the Close providing an opportunity to walk through Ben Dearnley’s sculpture exhibition Avenue of Champions. Ben’s sculptures focus on the ‘power zones’ of twelve of the UK’s past and current Olympic and Paralympic champions and are sculpted in the timeless materials of bronze and marble. They remain in the west cloister throughout the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics until 16 September.
Please note: there is no public parking in the Close, please use the city’s car parks or ‘Park and Ride’ facilities. There will be no vehicular access into the Close that morning between 7.30am – 8.10am.
