The county’s top athletes and many of the people who work tirelessly for sport at a grass roots level were celebrated at the sixth Wiltshire Sports Awards on 21 October.
More than 100 nominations were received by Wiltshire Council this year, all of which highlighted the exceptional work and achievements of athletes, sports clubs, volunteers and coaches across Wiltshire.
The top nominations from each category were invited to the awards event, hosted by former England rugby captain Phil de Glanville and featuring special guest speaker, serial adventurer James Ketchell. James is the first person to have rowed across the Atlantic Ocean, successfully summited Mount Everest and cycled 18,000 miles around the world.
Baroness Scott of Bybrook OBE, leader of Wiltshire Council, said: “Once again the Wiltshire Sports Awards have proven to be a wonderful celebration of the hard work and dedication of many people at all levels of the sporting community in the county.
“It is a showcase for the hard work of athletes and the sheer dedication of all those people who put in so much time and effort throughout the year to ensure our grass roots sports clubs are able to offer residents of all ages the opportunity to get involved in sport.”
Maggie Rae, corporate director, said: “All the nominees were hugely inspirational, and it was wonderful to hear their stories. Sport plays a major part in maintaining good health and wellbeing and I am sure the success of all these athletes will help to encourage more of us to get involved in sport and live more active, healthier lives.”
James Ketchell said “It was fantastic to see the commitment and hard work that is going on day in day out at all levels of sports in Wiltshire and to see that recognised this evening.”
