As part of Culture 24’s nationwide ‘Museums at Night’ initiative, Salisbury Cathedral will be opening its doors late on 18th May. Hundreds of museums, galleries and heritage sites around the country will be doing likewise.
The Cathedral is running a free action packed open evening called Night Visions: An Evening at Salisbury Cathedral from 7pm -10pm.
“We’re delighted to be part of this year’s ‘Museums at Night’ celebration by opening the Cathedral for the evening and have devised three fast moving hours of different activities to entertain our younger and older visitors alike. There are four elements to the evening: music, stories, tours and hands-on activities. This event is a ‘first’ for the Cathedral. Come along for the evening, we might just surprise you!” said David Coulthard, Director of Marketing and Visitor Services.
Expect a ‘come and sing’ workshop, stories and poems in the lantern-lit cloister garden, organ demos, mystery object treasure hunts in the cathedral and cloisters, and an introduction to the medieval frieze of well-known bible stories in the Chapter House. There will also be a quirky ‘Things-you-never-knew’ trail of the cathedral.
For more hands-on people there will be the chance to make beautiful illuminated letters, medieval clay gargoyles and a patterned candle-holder and you can even have a go at some poetry writing.
The highlight for those that have a head for height will be the chance to go on a 45 minute tower tour to see the view over the beautiful city of Salisbury as night falls.
