The Marlborough Downs has been selected as one of 12 Nature Improvement Areas. The 12 regions were chosen from 70 that were bidding against each other to gain a share of £7.5 million over three years. The funding has been awarded to the Nature Improvement Areas by the Government to help local groups carry out work to improve, expand and link networks of wildlife sites. It is hoped that this will help endangered and declining species and encourage them into the areas .
The Marlborough Downs is the only farmer-led project to make the final 12. The aim for the downs is to restore chalk and grassland habitats, create a network of ponds and increase the numbers of farmland birds.
